Legislative Update from Rep. Sondra Erickson 7/22/2022

July 22, 2022
Dear Neighbors,

I hope you have enjoyed the warmer temperatures this week as we approach the halfway point of summer. It’s been great to see so many of you out and about around the district.

I’ve heard from many of you that are concerned about high levels of inflation and the ways it has impacted your family budgets. Just last week, new economic data was released showing that inflation has risen to 9.1%. This is the highest inflation our nation has seen since 1981.

Out of control fiscal policies from President Biden and Governor Walz have exacerbated this problem and put many Americans’ budgets into disarray.

That’s why it is more important than ever for lawmakers to return to St. Paul next year and provide the historic tax relief you deserve. By dramatically cutting taxes, we can make sure that you have more money in your pockets. This is the best and most effective way to fight historic levels of inflation.

Veterans Bonus Pay

This year, the legislature approved a Veterans Bill that included service bonuses to post-9/11 era veterans and Gold Star Families. Previously, Minnesota has given bonuses to service members for other conflicts including WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Because of the withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan in 2021, post-9/11 veterans are now eligible to receive these bonuses.

The application period has officially opened, and the last day to apply is June 30, 2024, unless the funds have been exhausted prior to that date.

You can find the application and more information about the program here.

Mental Health Crisis Hotline

People experiencing a mental health crisis have a new way to reach out for help as of this week, they can simply call or text the numbers 9-8-8.

Modeled after 911, the new three-digit 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is designed to be a memorable and quick number that connects people who are suicidal or in any other mental health crisis to a trained mental health professional.
